The Origins of Zionism

The Origins of Zionism, David Vital's 1975 study from Oxford University Press's Clarendon imprint, is a scholarly history covering the intellectual and political origins of the Zionist movement in nineteenth century Europe. Vital was an established historian of modern Jewish and Israeli political history, and the book remains a standard reference for this early period, the first in his trilogy on Zionism's history. Its authority rests on close archival and documentary research. Its limit is its publication date: five decades of subsequent scholarship have added material and perspectives, particularly non-European ones, that a 1975 study could not incorporate.
