The 'Painter's Manual' of Dionysius of Fourna

Paul Hetherington's 1974 translation, published by Sagittarius Press, of The Painter's Manual of Dionysius of Fourna, an eighteenth century Mount Athos monk's technical guide for Orthodox iconographers, is the standard English rendering of a text that codifies the iconographic types, compositions and technical methods Orthodox icon painters were trained to follow. Its strength is that it makes a primary technical manual, central to understanding how Orthodox iconography reproduces standardised religious imagery across centuries, accessible to an English readership through a careful scholarly translation. Its limit is that Dionysius's manual, though influential, represents one eighteenth century codification of a much older painting tradition, so a claim about earlier Byzantine iconographic practice should be checked against sources contemporary with the earlier period rather than read back through this later manual alone.
