The Peyote Cult, Weston La Barre's 1938 ethnography from Yale University Press, is the first full ethnographic study of the peyote religion, later revised across several subsequent editions as the practice and its scholarship developed. Its strength is that it remains a foundational, still cited source for the diffusion of the peyote ritual across the Plains, read here alongside Omer Stewart's later work on the same diffusion. Its limit is its age and the era's ethnographic conventions; later Native scholarship on the Native American Church should be read alongside it for the tradition's own account of itself.
