Hugh Urban's The Power of Tantra, published by I.B. Tauris in 2010, is a scholarly study examining tantra, sexuality and the politics of how tantric traditions have been studied, represented and often sensationalized within South Asian studies itself. Urban is an established scholar of tantra and new religious movements. Its strength is that it is a peer-reviewed academic monograph engaging both the primary tantric material and the history of its scholarly and popular reception. Its limit is that its focus is substantially on the politics of representation and interpretation, so a claim needing a detailed doctrinal or ritual account of a specific tantric lineage needs a source addressing that tradition directly.
