Diarmaid MacCulloch's award winning comprehensive history of the European Reformation, published by Viking in 2003. MacCulloch is a professor of the history of the church at the University of Oxford. Its strength is a wide, well documented synthesis covering the Reformation's theological, political and military course across the whole of Europe, including the Schmalkaldic League's formation, the 1546 to 1547 Schmalkaldic War against Charles V, and the 1555 Peace of Augsburg that followed it. Its limit is that, as a continent spanning single volume history, a specific battle or negotiation receives less depth than a dedicated military or diplomatic study would provide.
