The Relics of the Passion - Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme

This is the Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme's own account of itself as custodian of relics traditionally associated with Helena, mother of Constantine, including fragments said to be of the Cross, a nail and thorns, and the Titulus Crucis inscription. As the custodial institution's self-presentation it is the correct source for what the basilica itself claims to hold and how it presents that claim to visitors and pilgrims. Its limit is inherent to any custodian source describing its own relics, it states the tradition's claim rather than independently authenticating it, so a claim about the actual historical authenticity of these objects, as against the tradition surrounding them, needs an independent scholarly or forensic source.
