Daniel Pipes's The Rushdie Affair, Birch Lane Press, 1990, is a scholarly study, written close to the events it covers. Its strength is that it was one of the earlier serious academic attempts to place the Rushdie affair, the novel, the Ayatollah's fatwa and the Western reaction, in a single connected analysis. Its limit is that Pipes is a politically engaged commentator on Islam and the Middle East as well as an academic, and later scholarship on the affair has expanded well beyond what a study written in its immediate aftermath could cover.
