Cyrus I. Scofield's The Scofield Reference Bible, Oxford University Press, 1909, is a primary text, an editor's own annotated dispensationalist Bible. Its strength is that it is the actual edition that did more than any other single publication to spread dispensationalist reading in American Protestantism, so it is the primary evidence of what that reading looked like in print. Its limit is that Scofield's notes are his own interpretive framework presented alongside the scriptural text, not independent scholarly commentary, and should be read as such.
