Georges B. J. Dreyfus's The Sound of Two Hands Clapping, The Education of a Tibetan Buddhist Monk, published by the University of California Press in 2003, is a scholarly ethnographic study of traditional Tibetan Buddhist monastic education, written by a scholar who trained for years in the Tibetan monastic system himself before becoming an academic. That dual standing, trained monastic and Western-trained scholar, gives the book unusual direct access alongside standard university press peer review. It describes the traditional Geluk monastic curriculum specifically as Dreyfus experienced and studied it, not every Tibetan Buddhist school's education, which can differ.
