The Sutta-Nipata

This is V. Fausboll's translation of the Sutta-Nipata, an early collection of Buddhist verse discourses, published as volume ten of the Sacred Books of the East series under Max Muller's general editorship and now hosted on the Internet Sacred Text Archive. As a primary Buddhist scripture in a translation produced by a recognized nineteenth century Pali scholar for an academically edited series, it is an appropriate source for the text's own content and its early transmission. Its limit is the ordinary one for a nineteenth century translation, later Pali scholarship has refined some readings and the Sacred Books of the East series carries the interpretive assumptions of its own Victorian moment, so a claim resting on a fine point of translation or on current Buddhist studies scholarship benefits from checking a modern critical translation alongside this historic one.
