The Veronica and the Relics of St Peter's Basilica

This is the Fabbrica di San Pietro in Vaticano's own custodial account of the relics of St Peter's Basilica, including the Veronica, the Holy Face cloth kept in the pier bearing St Veronica's name and shown only rarely, venerated at the basilica since the early eighth century. As the custodian institution's own account it is the correct source for what the basilica itself holds and claims, and for the documented history of the relic's veneration there. Its limit is exactly that custodial character, it presents the tradition from within, not an independent historical or forensic assessment, so a claim about the cloth's actual origin needs an independent scholarly source alongside this custodial one.

Facts

Reliability Tier
2
The Fabbrica di San Pietro in Vaticano's own page describing a venerated relic in its own basilica's custody; a genuine institutional record, but one written in the devotional register proper to describing a venerated object rather than in the register of independent critical history, hence the middle tier.
Notes
The Holy Face (Veronica) is kept in the pier of St Veronica and shown rarely; venerated at the basilica since the early 8th century.
