The Way of a Pilgrim is an anonymous nineteenth century Russian primary text; the atlas records no author because none is reliably known, and no publication year because the work's own composition and early circulation history are themselves debated by its editors. Its strength is that it is the principal route by which the Jesus Prayer became known outside Orthodoxy, a genuinely influential primary account of the practice in its own words. Its limit is that its own authorship and the reliability of its narrative as autobiography rather than literary composition are both open questions among its scholarly editors.
