The Yakut, Waldemar Jochelson's 1933 ethnographic monograph, American Museum of Natural History, Anthropological Papers volume 33 part 2, is a classic ethnographic monograph on the Sakha, or Yakut, covering material culture and kumys, fermented mare's milk, ritual practice including vessel form and decoration; Jochelson also published specifically on kumiss vessel decoration in the 1906 Boas Anniversary Volume. Its strength is that it reaches the choron vessel's form, carving and kumys symbolism directly, from a specialist who also wrote a dedicated study of the same vessel decoration. Its limit is that it predates by decades the Soviet era suppression of Ysyakh, its later revival, and the vessel's modern souvenir and emblem use, none of which this 1933 monograph can reach or is claimed for.
