States the Church of Sweden's General Synod approved, by 176 of 249 voting members, letting priests perform marriages, using that word, for same-sex couples, aligned with civil marriage legislation that had come into force on 1 May 2009. States individual priests would still be free to decline to perform such a ceremony. States the church had offered same-sex couples a religious blessing of their union since 2007, before this vote extended full marriage to them.
