The Philadelphia Museum of Art's own collection record for its Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara, Bodhisattva of Compassion, a Himalayan Buddhist cast metal sculpture of the early fourteenth century, object 105992, an eleven-headed figure whose surviving body and one splayed layer of arms represent the many heads, eyes and hands standing for the bodhisattva's countless ways of seeing, hearing and aiding all beings, originally completed by a third layer of hands fanning across the back to reach one thousand arms in total.
