Charles Tilly's foundational sociological and historical study of the 1793 counter-revolution in the Vendee, examining the region's parish structure, land tenure and clerical loyalties to explain why it rose against the Revolution while neighboring regions did not. The starting point for essentially all later academic scholarship on the conflict, including the genocide debate that later historians, among them Reynald Secher, Jean-Clement Martin and Michel Vovelle, have carried on in dialogue with it.
