Time Out, Review of Once Upon a Time in China II

Time Out (London), staff review, bylined TR

Time Out's review of Tsui Hark's 1992 Hong Kong film, in which the folk hero Wong Fei hung confronts a xenophobic fictional secret society, the White Lotus Clan, during the Boxer era. Its strength is that it reads the film's antagonists as a deliberate commentary on East West relations and China's political stability rather than as a simple villain. Its limit is that it is a short capsule review, not a sustained historical or religious studies analysis of the real White Lotus tradition the film fictionalizes.
