Gerry van Klinken's comparative field study examines the communal violence, ultimately claiming roughly ten thousand lives nationally, that broke out across several Indonesian regions during the country's democratic transition after President Suharto's fall in May 1998, with dedicated chapters on the escalation of fighting in Poso, Central Sulawesi and the separate mobilization of violence in Ambon, Maluku. Van Klinken argues the conflicts originated substantially in local political struggles, chiefly over district splitting and access to civil service and elected office among rival elites, that were then mobilized along religious lines once fighting began, rather than treating them as conflicts caused by religious difference as such. Van Klinken is a Research Fellow at KITLV, the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies.
