Origin from 2017
Beginning in 2017 under regional Communist Party secretary Chen Quanguo, the Chinese government detained an estimated one million or more Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities without trial in a network of facilities it called vocational education and training centers, while an estimated sixteen thousand mosques across the region were razed or damaged. In 2022, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights assessed that China's policies in Xinjiang may amount to crimes against humanity.
