On 14 May 2026, about a thousand people gathered beside the Kadey River in Batouri, Cameroon, as the design for the country's first local Baha'i House of Worship was unveiled to residents of the town and surrounding communities. The design draws on gbassara, a word from the Gbaya people of eastern Cameroon naming a family home's central pillar, a bird whose song guides hunters through the forest, and an instrument whose sound calls a village together. Nine stylized birds rise toward a single point at the crown of the building, evoking unity across diversity, and the walkway approaching the temple follows the arcing course of the river itself. Local officials, traditional chiefs, members of Cameroon's national and regional Baha'i institutions and residents of nearby villages attended the gathering, at which Baha'i institutional representatives described the future building as a space meant to serve as both a sanctuary for prayer and a center of unity for people of every background. The project follows the Universal House of Justice's 2024 call for three new Baha'i Houses of Worship, in Brazil, Malawi and Cameroon.
