Origin from 1967
Seven years after Dennis Bennett sparked the charismatic movement at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Van Nuys in 1960, and twenty two years before the World Pentecostal Assemblies of God Fellowship formed in Indianapolis in 1989, both already recorded here, Pentecostal experience crossed into the Roman Catholic Church itself. Graduate student Ralph Keifer and history professor William Storey, both teaching at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, organized a student retreat on the baptism of the Holy Spirit at the Ark and the Dove retreat center in nearby Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, held from 17 to 19 February 1967 for about twenty five students from Duquesne and La Roche College. Several students reported speaking in tongues and other charismatic experiences during the weekend, and within weeks Storey carried an account of it to students at the University of Notre Dame, where a similar prayer meeting in March 1967 spread the experience further. The Duquesne Weekend is remembered as the founding event of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, a movement that brought Pentecostal style worship into Catholic parishes worldwide over the following decades.
