Origin from 2007
Beginning on 18 September 2007, thousands of Buddhist monks led daily marches across Myanmar protesting a sudden fuel price rise, growing by 24 September to between thirty thousand and one hundred thousand demonstrators in Yangon alone. On 26 September, soldiers barricaded Shwedagon Pagoda and beat and tear gassed a crowd of some seven hundred protesters, and from 27 September the military raided monasteries nationwide, arresting hundreds of monks in a crackdown that continued into early October.
