On Sunday, 10 March 2019, President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dedicated the Rome Italy Temple, the first of three sessions held that day out of seven held over three days, 10 to 12 March 2019. It was the Church's 162nd operating temple and its first in Italy. The dedication came one day after Nelson met with Pope Francis at the Vatican on 9 March 2019, the first meeting in history between a president of the Church and a Roman Catholic pontiff. All fifteen members of the Church's First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles gathered in Rome for the dedication, the first time the entire body had assembled outside the United States. At the time, more than 27,000 Church members lived in Italy and neighboring countries, nearly 170 years after the Church's first missionaries arrived in Italy in 1850, when Elder Lorenzo Snow performed the faith's first baptism there.
