Origin from 1997
Twenty seven years after Tenrikyo established its Mission Center in Paris in 1970, already recorded here, and three years before Tenrikyo opened its UK Centre in Wembley, London, in 2000, also recorded here, the faith reached a new region of the world with its own dedicated center. On 14 December 1997, following the Young Men's Association's decision earlier that year to mark Oyasama's hundred and tenth anniversary with an Australia Mission project, Tenrikyo opened the Oceania Centre in Brisbane, Queensland, giving the faith a coordinated base for missionary work across Australia and the wider Oceania region for the first time. Tenrikyo's own history records the centre's founding date and its role training members through the recurring Australia Study Tour. Robert S. Ellwood's academic study of Tenrikyo's structure and meaning situates centers of this kind within the faith's wider pattern of institutional expansion beyond Japan.
