Zoroastrianism's standing as the religion of the Persian state did not arrive all at once. The earliest evidence comes from the Achaemenid Empire, where Darius the Great's own inscriptions repeatedly invoke Ahura Mazda as the god who granted him his throne, though the empire left no single decree naming the faith as official state religion in the way later centuries would understand the term.
The clearer and better documented turn came centuries later, with the Sasanian Empire, founded in 224 when Ardashir I was crowned at Ctesiphon. The Sasanians took Zoroastrianism and reshaped it into a centralising, legitimising state ideology, binding throne and altar together in a way the Achaemenids never had.
