Christianity arrived in American Samoa in the 1830s through the London Missionary Society, and Congregationalist teaching became so thoroughly woven into fa'a Samoa, the Samoan way of life, that village governance and church life are still difficult to separate. The Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa remains the largest body, and Sunday observance is strict enough to shape the rhythm of the whole territory. Roman Catholic and Methodist missions followed later in the nineteenth century, and the territory today is overwhelmingly Christian with almost no other tradition holding a significant local presence.

The Navy Governed Lightly, and the Church Filled What It Left
When the United States formally took control of eastern Samoa through the Deeds of Cession of 1900 and 1904, the Navy administered the new territory with a deliberately light hand, leaving traditional village governance, the matai chief system and, alongside it, the London Missionary Society's Congregationalist church structure largely intact rather than replacing them with an American civil administration built from scratch. That restraint mattered because by 1900 the church John Williams had planted at Sapapali'i in 1830 was no longer a foreign import competing with fa'a Samoa, the Samoan way, it had become one of the institutions fa'a Samoa was built from, village pastors holding real standing in local decision making alongside the matai. Naval governors came and went across five decades of administration until Samoa passed to the Department of the Interior in 1951, but the church's civic role never depended on which flag flew over the governor's residence.
The Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa, the LMS mission's direct descendant, remains the largest religious body in the territory today, and Sunday observance is still strict enough to shape commercial hours and public life across the islands, a continuity that survived colonial administration by never being displaced by it.
