The Attribution of the Theban Alphabet to Honorius of Thebes

Trithemius printed the Theban letters in the Polygraphia and said they were the alphabet of Honorius surnamed the Theban, used to hide the follies of his magic, and that Pietro d'Abano testifies to this in his greater fourth book. That single sentence is the whole of the evidence for a medieval Theban script, and it is the sentence every later account repeats.

Peterson tested it while preparing his edition and translation of the Sworn Book of Honorius. He looked for the passage in the works of d'Abano and reported that he could not identify any such passage in them, noting that writings falsely put under d'Abano's name are not unusual. He then collated the manuscripts of the Sworn Book itself. Only one of them, British Library Sloane 3853, contains the alphabet, and that manuscript states plainly that it took the characters from the third book of Agrippa, who was Trithemius's own pupil and who printed the letters in 1533. The script therefore travels out from Trithemius and back to Honorius rather than the other way about. Peterson also observed that the letterforms are built on the Latin alphabet and not the Greek, which is what a script devised in western Europe would look like and not what a script from Greek Thebes would.

The investigation is inconclusive in the direction that matters here. It removes the ground from under the ascription without naming who actually cut the letters, so the origin of the script stays open while the claim made for it does not.

State of the Question

Open. The ascription is shown to rest on a citation that cannot be traced, but no maker has been named and no witness earlier than 1518 has been found. 1

What the investigation settled and what it left open are different things. That the ascription to Honorius cannot be supported is now established. Who cut the letters, and whether any pre-1518 witness survives unread in a Solomonic or ars notoria manuscript, is not.

The Citation That Cannot Be Found

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Johannes Trithemius printed a Theban alphabet in his 1518 Polygraphia and said where it came from in a single sentence: it was the alphabet of Honorius, called the Theban, devised to hide the follies of his magic, and Pietro d'Abano testified to this in his greater fourth book. Every later account of the script, down to today's popular occult reference works, repeats some version of that one sentence, because for four centuries nobody checked it against the text it names.

Joseph Peterson checked it while preparing his critical edition of the Sworn Book of Honorius, the medieval grimoire Trithemius's own claim points back to. He went looking for the passage in Pietro d'Abano's actual writings and could not find it. Works falsely circulated under d'Abano's name were not unusual in the period, so a missing citation does not by itself prove Trithemius invented the claim outright, but it does mean the one piece of evidence anyone has ever offered for a medieval Theban alphabet cannot currently be traced to any surviving text.

What Peterson found instead redirects the whole question. Only one manuscript of the Sworn Book, British Library Sloane 3853, contains the alphabet at all, and that manuscript states plainly that it took the letters from the third book of a work by Cornelius Agrippa, who was Trithemius's own student and who printed the same letters in 1533, fifteen years after his teacher. The script does not descend from Honorius through Trithemius. It travels the other direction, out from Trithemius's own circle and onto a manuscript credited to Honorius, backward from what four centuries of retelling assumed.

What the Letterforms Themselves Say

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

A script's letterforms can testify against a claim even when no document survives to argue the point directly, and the Theban alphabet's own shapes are exactly that kind of witness. Joseph Peterson, working through the manuscript history of the Sworn Book of Honorius, observed that the Theban letters are built on the Latin alphabet's own basic strokes, not on Greek. That is a small technical observation with a large consequence: a script devised by a magician working in Thebes, as the traditional ascription implies, would be expected to show some relationship to the Greek alphabet actually used in that city, or to Coptic, and the Theban letters show neither. What they look like is a European cipher alphabet built by someone who already read Latin, using Latin letterforms as scaffolding and disguising them just enough to pass as foreign.

That observation does not name who actually made the alphabet. It only clears the ground: the traditional ascription to a magician named Honorius of Thebes rests on a citation that cannot currently be traced, and the letters themselves point toward a Latin-literate deviser rather than a Greek-speaking one, which is not the same as identifying that deviser. No manuscript witness to the script earlier than Trithemius's own 1518 printing has yet been found, so whether an older tradition existed and simply went unwritten before him, or whether the alphabet is his own generation's invention entirely, remains open. The atlas records that gap honestly as an open question rather than filling it with the confident sentence popular occult literature has been repeating since 1518.
