Spirits that animate or inhabit a dead body without being the reanimated corpse itself, drawn here from the Hindu vetala, which possesses corpses in charnel grounds. The distinction from the reanimated dead category is that the body is a vehicle for another entity, not a corpse acting under its own power. Excludes zombies and revenants, which are grouped as reanimated dead.
