Canticles: prayer texts drawn directly from scripture rather than composed as free verse, sung or recited within the liturgy in the same manner as a psalm, currently represented by the Benedictus and the Nunc Dimittis. The category is defined by that scriptural origin rather than by subject or occasion. Excludes the biblical psalms themselves, which are catalogued as their own body of prayer, and excludes hymns of free composition.
