What an ecumenical council promulgates. The authority is different in kind from a papal document, because it is the assembled bishops who decide and the pope who confirms, and a council can therefore bind in a way an individual ruling cannot. The councils themselves are catalogued separately in this atlas, with who convened them, where they sat and how their decisions were received; this heading is for the texts they produced.
