Confucianism Roles holds offices particular to the Confucian tradition of ritual and textual learning, distinct from roles shared across East Asian folk religion more broadly. The Ru, the scholar ritualist class Confucius himself came from, began as court trained specialists in the rites, funerals and music of Zhou dynasty tradition and evolved into the examination trained literati who staffed the civil bureaucracies of imperial China, Korea and Vietnam.
