A masked sacred dance is performed in a mask or costume understood to embody the deity, spirit or ancestor it represents, so the performer is treated for the duration of the dance as a vessel rather than as an actor playing a role. The mask itself is frequently consecrated separately from the dance and handled under its own restrictions, as with the Theyyam headdresses and the Noh masks recorded here.
