Sites significant to the religious practice of the Hopi people of the American Southwest. Access to some Hopi ceremonial knowledge and sites is restricted to initiated members of the community, and the Atlas describes such material without disclosing what the tradition itself keeps closed. Sacred sites are grouped by tradition at a fine grain here, so a heading can be narrow without that saying anything about the tradition's own reach.

Facts
Status
Status Today
Living. The ceremonial cycle is current and the places named in it are in use. Hopi ceremonial knowledge is held by particular clans and societies and is restricted by them. A great deal was recorded and published by outsiders around 1900 without permission, and the Hopi position is that being in print is not a release. 2
Overview
What Defines This Grouping
Places across northern Arizona and the wider Colorado Plateau tied to particular clans' migration histories and to the ceremonial calendar. Many lie far outside the present reservation and are ancestral villages and shrines rather than places of residence. 2
