Sites significant to the religions of ancient Mesopotamia, Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian practice among them, known through archaeology and cuneiform texts rather than continuous religious use, since none of these traditions has living practitioners today.

Facts
Overview
What Defines This Grouping
The temples and ziggurats of the world's earliest cities. The temple was a household: the god lived in the sanctuary, was washed, fed and clothed daily, and owned land, herds and labour. The ziggurat was the platform of that household, not a building the public entered. 2
Peoples and Traditions Covered
Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian cities across three thousand years, with different languages, different capitals and pantheons that were repeatedly rearranged around whichever city held power. "Mesopotamian religion" is a convenience for a long sequence of related but distinct systems. 3

Sacred Sites of Mesopotamia

This group gathers the sacred sites of ancient Mesopotamia, the temples and towering ziggurats of Sumer, Babylon and Assyria, raised to the gods of the world's earliest cities. The ziggurat, a stepped temple-tower, is among the most characteristic monuments of the ancient Near East.

The browser will find the temple-cities and sacred structures of the Mesopotamian civilisations. The entries describe each site's deity and history as a monument of a vanished religion.
