Ryukyuan Religion Sites

The sacred sites of the indigenous religion of the Ryukyu Islands, practiced before and alongside the arrival of Buddhism and other traditions in the archipelago now part of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Its most sacred site, Sefa Utaki, was the most sacred official site of the Ryukyu Kingdom, the place tradition holds the goddess Amamikyu descended to, and, together with the utaki of nearby Kudaka Island, anchors the tradition's wider network of sacred groves.
