Instrumental Form

Sacred sound built from an instrument rather than the voice, gathering the shofar blasts of Judaism, the gagaku court music of Shinto Japan and the shakuhachi breath practice of suizen within Zen Buddhism. The category groups by that instrumental means rather than by the occasion the sound marks. Excludes vocal chant styles, which have their own category, and instruments used only outside a ritual setting.
