Kojiki groups its three scrolls, Kamitsumaki, Nakatsumaki and Shimotsumaki, the upper, middle and lower books of Japan's oldest surviving chronicle. The upper scroll covers the age of the gods, the middle and lower scrolls move into the reigns of the early, semi legendary emperors, and the three way division is the manuscript's own, not an editorial choice made for this atlas.
