Non-canonical Texts

Early writings that circulated inside a tradition, were read and valued in it, and were never received into its canon. Some are quoted by name in the works of teachers whose own standing was never in doubt, some survive only in fragments or in a single translation, and some sit in an appendix to a canonical collection rather than inside it. Being outside a canon is a decision a community made about a text rather than a verdict on the text itself, and the atlas reports the decision rather than joining it. The group is deliberately narrow: canon status is recorded on each work's own page, and it becomes a shelf only where a family of works shares it.
