The Illuminates of Thanateros gave chaos magic its first organised body in 1978, built on the premise that any belief system is a tool to be picked up and set down again rather than a truth to be sworn to for life. That premise sets it apart from every other order in this list, each of which asks its members to commit to one system, Masonic, Rosicrucian or Hermetic, and hold to it. A chaotic society is defined by that refusal to commit to a single system, not by disorder in its own organisation.
