Belphegor

Belphegor represents sloth in this pairing, continuing a demon whose origin lies in Baal Peor, a Moabite god condemned in the Hebrew Bible, reinterpreted across the medieval period as a spirit of laziness and, in some later folklore, of false invention rather than simple inactivity. The pairing with acedia, the deadening of spiritual effort rather than mere physical rest, reflects a specifically monastic understanding of the sin.
