Mammon pairs with greed in this classification, a demon whose name is drawn straight from the Aramaic word for wealth used in the New Testament rather than from any older mythological figure, which makes the association unusually direct among the seven. The gospel line that a person cannot serve both God and Mammon, Matthew 6:24, is the root of treating the word as a demon of avarice at all, a reading later systematized rather than one the gospel itself spells out.
