Ezra is the main character of the Book of Ezra, and according to the Hebrew Bible he was an important Jewish scribe and priest in the early Second Temple period, flourishing in the fifth or fourth century BCE. The Greek Septuagint renders the name Esdras. In the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament he is an important figure in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, which tradition holds he wrote and edited respectively, and tradition also credits him with the Books of Chronicles. The atlas records him as a traditionally named author, with the attribution resting on later tradition rather than on the texts themselves.
