Divinity Atlas
The Occult Revival Wrote the Last Layer for Five Systems at Once
The atlas records where a tradition's material actually comes from, one dated layer per source, and several very different systems turn out to share their newest layer with each other. All of it lands between 1888 and 1924.
One Late Window, Five Systems
A decan carries three layers of history: Egyptian coffin lid tradition from about 2100 BCE, Hellenistic astrology from Roman Egypt around 100 BCE, and a Golden Dawn correspondence dated 1888. The order's Tree of Life paths and its ten Sephiroth carry that same 1888 layer as their newest, and so do its archangels, its elemental weapons and its qliphoth, well over two hundred pages in all. The Enochian system inherited from John Dee in 1584 gets an identical Golden Dawn layer in 1888, then a further one from Aleister Crowley's Thelema in 1900.
Three more systems finish soon after. Modern esoteric runology gives the runes their working layer in 1902. The printed grimoire tradition gives the Goetia's demon hierarchy its layer in 1904. The hexagram names most readers now use for the I Ching come from Richard Wilhelm's 1924 translation. Earliest to latest, the span is thirty six years, for material whose own origin stories reach back thousands of years further.
What the Date Is Really About
None of this says these systems were invented in the occult revival. It says that is when each one acquired the specific form now practiced: the correspondences, the attributions, the names most books still use. The concentration in one late Victorian window is partly a fact about the occult revival and partly a fact about which systems the atlas has finished cataloguing layer by layer so far.
