Leonard Howell began preaching in the parish of St Thomas in the early 1930s that Selassie was the living God, drawing crowds large enough that the colonial government arrested him for sedition in 1934 and later committed him to an asylum, treatment that did nothing to stop the movement that took the emperor's pre coronation title as its own name, Rastafari. The new faith grew for decades as a movement of the rural and urban poor before reggae carried it worldwide in the 1970s, Bob Marley chief among the musicians who set its language of Babylon, repatriation and Zion to a beat that reached far beyond Jamaica's shores. It took its place beside, not instead of, the island's older faiths, the Catholicism and Protestant churches of the colonial centuries and the African derived traditions slavery had already formed alongside them, one more faith the Caribbean's plantation history and its Atlantic ties to Africa had a hand in shaping. The CaribbeanFilter Results2 entriesPlace of OriginAllHejaz (1)DenominationsAllAhmadiyya (1)Alawites (1)Alevism (1)Ibadism (1)Ismailism (1)Kharijites (1)Nation of Islam (1)Quranism (1)Salafism (1)Shia (Twelver) (1)Sufism (1)Sunni (1)Wahhabism (1)Zaidiyyah (1)ScripturesAllAl-Istibsar (1)Al-Muwatta (1)Buyruk (1)Da'a'im al-Islam (1)Hadith (1)Jami at-Tirmidhi (1)Jami' al-Rabi' (1)Kebra Nagast (1)King James Version (1)Kitab al-Kafi (1)Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih (1)Musnad al-Imam Zayd (1)Sahih al-Bukhari (1)Sahih Muslim (1)Sunan Abu Dawud (1)Sunan an-Nasa'i (1)Sunan Ibn Majah (1)Tahdhib al-Ahkam (1)The Quran (1)Origin EraAll610 (1)1930 (1)Conception of the DivineAllMonotheistic: one God (2)Status TodayAllLiving tradition, practised today (2)Establishment StatusAllVaries by Province (1)Closed Practice StatusAllLiving, and practised in varied local forms (1)Partly restricted: some elements are closed to outsiders (1)Giving Obligation EnforceabilityAllCodified Obligation With Consequences (1)Customary Norm (1)Usury PositionAllInterest of any kind on a loan is forbidden (1)Marriage PositionAllMarriage may licitly be polygynous (1)Sexuality PositionAllSame-sex orientation or practice is held to bar full membership or participation (2)Kind of TraditionAllAbrahamic (Monotheistic) (1)New Religious Movement (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 2IslamThe CaribbeanRastafariThe CaribbeanConnectionsAssociated WithBonacci, "The Return to Ethiopia of the Twelve Tribes of Israel," New West Indian Guide, vol. 90 (2016), Sources Well-attested This source names The Caribbean directly: "opening its first branches outside the Caribbean and Britain in 1985, in Barbados, Canada, the United States and Tobago."Source Bonacci, "The Return to Ethiopia of the Twelve Tribes of Israel," New West Indian Guide, vol. 90 (2016)Giulia Bonaccitier 1Bonacci, Exodus!
