Butter of Antimony

Butter of Antimony is the fuming, waxy, butter-like solid or oily liquid made by distilling antimony ore or metal with corrosive sublimate, one of the most important and most heavily studied compound preparations of antimony in the whole alchemical repertoire. Its name records its physical texture, a soft, greasy, pale mass not unlike dairy butter, quite unlike the appearance of either of its two starting ingredients. It served as a starting point for further antimony preparations, most notably powder of algaroth, and was itself used, with real medical risk, as a caustic and purgative. In modern chemistry it is antimony trichloride, a well characterized compound whose corrosive, fuming character is exactly what early chymists observed and described.

Butter of Antimony was made by distilling powdered stibnite ore, or metallic antimony, together with corrosive sublimate, mercuric chloride, heating the mixture in a retort until a heavy, fuming, pale liquid or soft waxy solid distilled over, its texture and appearance giving it its descriptive name despite bearing no relation whatsoever to actual dairy butter beyond the visual resemblance.
