Where science meets belief. The periodic table sits here beside the alchemical principles, the operations of the Great Work and the Hermetic axioms, because these are the categories that tried to explain what things are made of and why. The chemistry is settled and the alchemy is not, and the atlas keeps them side by side rather than pretending either one explains the other: seven metals carry a planetary tradition thousands of years old, most of the other elements carry none at all, and the honest record says which is which.

What This Section Gathers

This section gathers matter and mind as esoteric and philosophical traditions have described them, apart from the sciences that now claim much of the same ground. Periodic Elements, Alchemical Substances and Alchemical Principles cover matter itself, mundane and esoteric; Alchemical Apparatus, Alchemical Operations and the Magnum Opus Stages cover the practice and sequence of the Great Work; Hermetic Principles and Metaphysical Positions cover the philosophical claims made about reality's structure; Subtle Energies and Psi Phenomena cover forces and effects claimed to lie outside ordinary physical description; Studies records the investigations, historical and modern, that have tested some of these claims, and Scholarly Disciplines names the academic fields that study this cluster rather than practice or claim it.

Claim and Test, Kept Apart

Some of what sits here is philosophy and symbol, alchemy's stages read as often as not as a psychological or spiritual allegory rather than a chemistry, and the atlas describes it in the terms the tradition itself uses. Some of it is an empirical claim, a subtle energy or a psi effect asserted to be a real and measurable force, and there the atlas says plainly when the claim has been tested and with what result, linking to the study that tried and to an open question where the attempt stalled rather than to a conclusion nobody reached. The two registers sit side by side deliberately: alchemy's gold is a claim about the soul as often as about metal, and keeping the two apart without erasing either is the point of one section holding both.
