Calamine is the historical name for the zinc bearing ores used for many centuries to make brass, long before zinc itself was recognized as a distinct metal that could be isolated and worked on its own. Smelted together with copper ore, calamine's zinc content alloyed directly into the copper to produce brass, an ancient and highly valuable metallurgical trick performed successfully without anyone involved understanding that a new metal was being created and incorporated. The name covers what modern mineralogy recognizes as at least two chemically distinct minerals, the carbonate smithsonite and the silicate hemimorphite, not clearly separated from each other under the old name. Making It and Using It
Calamine was mined as an earthy, often yellowish or brownish mineral found in the weathered upper zones of zinc-bearing ore deposits, and its principal use for well over a thousand years was in brassmaking: crushed calamine was smelted together with copper ore or metallic copper in a closed crucible, the zinc content vaporizing at the smelting temperature and alloying directly into the molten copper before it could escape, producing brass without the maker ever seeing, isolating or even necessarily suspecting the existence of a separate zinc metal. This calamine brass process, called cementation, was the dominant method of brass production across much of the ancient and medieval world, and it worked reliably as a craft technique for far longer than anyone could have explained why it worked in terms of a distinct third metal being incorporated.
Calamine also found use in medicine, ground and prepared as a mild astringent and soothing application for skin complaints, a use that persists today under the same name in commercial calamine lotion, though the modern pharmaceutical formulation is a defined mixture of zinc oxide and a small amount of iron oxide rather than the historical mined mineral itself. The historical material sold as calamine was not chemically uniform, since different deposits yielded ore of somewhat different mineral composition, all grouped under the one practical trade name because they behaved similarly in the brassmaking furnace regardless of their precise underlying chemistry.
What It Actually Is
Calamine, examined with modern mineralogical tools, turns out to cover at least two chemically distinct minerals: smithsonite, zinc carbonate (ZnCO3), and hemimorphite, a zinc silicate (Zn4Si2O7(OH)2.H2O), which were not clearly distinguished from one another under the single trade name calamine until mineralogists in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries began systematically classifying ores by their actual chemical composition rather than by their practical behavior in a furnace. This is a genuine case of one historical name mapping onto more than one modern compound, not a matter of scholarly disagreement so much as a straightforward historical fact: pre-modern miners and metalworkers had no reliable way to distinguish a zinc carbonate from a zinc silicate by eye, and had no particular reason to, since both performed the same essential function in the brassmaking crucible.
The deeper discovery, that both minerals owed their usefulness to a shared zinc content, came only once zinc itself was isolated and recognized as a distinct element, a step achieved in India by around the twelfth to fourteenth century and independently in Europe considerably later. Modern zinc metallurgy still occasionally uses the name calamine loosely for zinc carbonate ore generally, a linguistic survival of the old trade name into a much more chemically precise industry than the one that coined it.
