Agni Mudra is a mudra, a symbolic hand-gesture of the Indian religious traditions, known in Sanskrit as Agni Mudra and signifying the seal of fire.
Form and meaning
In this seal the ring finger is folded to the base of the thumb, which presses over it. It is linked to the fire element and to warmth, metabolism and energy.
Mudras appear across Hindu and Buddhist ritual, iconography, classical dance and yoga, where a fixed position of the hands carries a settled meaning or is held to direct attention and breath. The gesture is described here within those documented traditions.
Sources and caution
Agni Mudra, the ring finger folded to the base of the thumb while the thumb presses over it, is presented within the same modern finger-element scheme as governing agni, fire, associated in popular mudra literature with digestion and metabolic heat, drawing loosely on the Ayurvedic concept of agni as the body's digestive fire. As with the rest of this set of seals, the concept of bodily agni is old and well attested in Ayurvedic medicine, but the specific finger gesture said to regulate it through this exact seal is a modern systematisation rather than an instruction found in the classical textual tradition.
