A Hymnal Two Kinds of Evidence Cannot Quite Agree On

Before the Church Hymnal, when it first appeared is oddly unsettled for a book with a known publisher and a known sponsoring body. An academic dissertation held by the TU Dublin repository studies the hymnal's first three editions as a set running from 1864 to 1919, dating the first of them to 1864. Yet the earliest surviving physical copies found in library and bookseller records tell a slightly different story. A copy held by Princeton Theological Seminary and digitized by the Internet Archive carries the date 1875. A bookseller's near fine miniature copy is marked "340th Thousand" and dated 1878, meaning three hundred and forty thousand copies had already been printed by the time that particular one left the press.

Neither kind of evidence is unreliable on its own terms. An academic study of a hymnal's editions is not casually wrong about which edition it is studying, and a library's own catalogue record of a physical book it holds is about as solid as evidence gets. They simply describe different things, a scholarly count of editions against a snapshot of a single print run years into whichever edition it belongs to, and nothing in either source resolves the gap between them. What is not in dispute is who stood behind the book from the start: it carries the authority of the Church of Ireland's own General Synod on its title page, published through the Dublin based Association for Promoting Christian Knowledge.
