Where Long Vocalic R Actually Appears

The most reliable place to meet the sound is in the genitive plural of the r-stem nouns, the small but central class that includes the kinship terms. The stem vowel lengthens before the ending, so a form meaning of the fathers or of the mothers carries long vocalic r as the vowel of its final syllable, and the same happens with the agent nouns built on verbal roots, of which Sanskrit has a great many. Those forms are frequent enough in liturgical and epic text that a reader will meet the letter, but they are all the same construction seen repeatedly rather than a spread of vocabulary. Sanskrit metre treats the syllable as heavy, as it treats every long vowel, so the length is audible in recitation and is not merely an orthographic distinction. That matters, because the classical metres are quantitative and a reciter who shortened the vowel would break the line.

The oral schools that transmitted the Vedic corpus developed permuted styles of recitation precisely to hold quantities and accents steady across generations, and vowel length was among the features those methods were built to protect.
